The part of the safari nobody sells you

Guests come to Tanzania for the wildlife and go home talking about the sky. It happens often enough that we now mention it at the planning stage, because with a small amount of forethought — choosing dates around the moon, asking for a camp away from generator lighting — the nights become as memorable as the days. Almost no operator raises it, and it costs nothing to arrange.

The reason Tanzania's skies are exceptional comes down to three things. There is virtually no light pollution across the northern circuit; the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area cover an area larger than several European countries with essentially no permanent electric lighting. The air is dry through much of the year, which means transparency. And the country sits around three degrees south of the equator.

That last point is the one worth dwelling on, because it is the real privilege and most visitors do not realise it. From near the equator you can see essentially the entire celestial sphere over the course of a year — both the northern constellations familiar to European and North American visitors and the southern sky they have never seen. There are very few accessible places on earth where both are available from the same spot, and Tanzania is one of them.

What you can see that you cannot see at home

The single most striking sight for a first-time visitor from the northern hemisphere is the Milky Way's galactic centre. From Tanzania the core of our galaxy, in Sagittarius, passes close to overhead rather than sitting low and murky on the horizon as it does from Britain or northern America. Overhead means you are looking through the least atmosphere, and the result is a band of light dense enough to cast a faint shadow on a moonless night. Guests routinely mistake it for cloud at first.

The Magellanic Clouds are the second revelation. These are two dwarf galaxies orbiting our own, visible only from southern latitudes, and they appear as detached luminous patches well away from the Milky Way. You are looking at objects around 160,000 and 200,000 light years away with your unaided eye. Most northern-hemisphere visitors have never seen another galaxy without a telescope except Andromeda, and often not even that.

The Southern Cross sits low in the south for much of the year, along with Alpha and Beta Centauri pointing towards it. Alpha Centauri is the nearest star system to our own at just over four light years, and it is simply not visible from most of Europe or North America. Eta Carinae, the Coalsack Nebula and the Jewel Box cluster are all in the same region of sky and all worth having pointed out.

Timing: the moon matters more than the season

The single most important variable is the moon, and it is the one nobody plans around. A full moon is bright enough to read by on the Serengeti plains and will wash out the Milky Way completely. If dark skies matter to you, aim for the week either side of new moon, and check the lunar calendar before fixing dates. This is a free decision that makes an enormous difference.

Season matters less but still matters. The dry months from June to October give the most consistently clear nights, and the galactic centre is well placed through the middle of the year. The green season brings dramatic cloud, which is better for photographs of the landscape and worse for stars — though a clear night after an afternoon storm, with the dust washed out of the air, produces the most transparent sky of all.

There is a happy coincidence for anyone travelling to see the calving season. January and February nights, between the storms, are frequently exceptional, and the mobile camps on the southern plains are among the darkest places you can sleep in East Africa. You may be there for the wildebeest and find the sky is what you remember.

Where to sleep for the best skies

Mobile tented camps on the southern Serengeti plains are the darkest option available, because they run generators for limited hours and there is nothing else within tens of kilometres. When the generator goes off at around ten in the evening, the sky that appears is genuinely startling. Ask specifically what time power shuts down; camps vary, and it makes the difference.

The Ngorongoro Crater rim is high, at around 2,300 metres, which puts you above a meaningful fraction of the atmosphere and its moisture. On a clear night the transparency is excellent. The trade-off is that the rim generates its own cloud and mist with some regularity, so it is more variable than the plains below.

Tarangire is convenient and dark, and it has the additional advantage of baobabs, which make extraordinary foreground silhouettes against a star field. If you have any interest in photographing the night sky, Tarangire's combination of dark horizon and dramatic tree shapes is the best composition opportunity on the northern circuit.

Photographing the night sky

The requirements are specific and modest. You need a tripod — this is the one situation on safari where a tripod earns its place in the luggage — a lens as wide and as fast as you have, ideally f/2.8 or better, and a camera that will let you set exposure manually. A phone will not do it, though recent models with a dedicated night mode do surprisingly well for a record shot.

A workable starting point is twenty seconds at f/2.8 and ISO 3200, focused manually at infinity using live view zoomed in on a bright star. Beyond roughly twenty to twenty-five seconds with a wide lens, the stars begin to trail as the earth rotates. Take a test frame, check the corners, and adjust. Shoot several frames of the same composition so you can stack them later if you want to reduce noise.

Compose with something in the foreground. A pure sky photograph is impressive to the person who took it and unremarkable to everyone else; a baobab, an acacia or the lit doorway of a tent against the Milky Way is a photograph. Ask your guide or the camp staff before wandering out in the dark — in unfenced camps you do not walk around at night unescorted, and that rule exists for good reason.

What to look for through the year

Orion is the bridge between the two skies and the constellation most northern visitors recognise instantly — but from Tanzania it appears upside down relative to how you know it, riding high overhead through the southern summer months of December to March rather than sitting on the southern horizon. The Orion Nebula, the middle "star" of the sword, resolves into a visible smudge of glowing gas with any binoculars at all, and it is one of the easiest deep-sky objects to show someone who has never looked before.

Scorpius, with the red supergiant Antares at its heart, dominates the mid-year sky and passes almost directly overhead from June to August. From Britain it is a low, half-glimpsed thing hugging the horizon; from the Serengeti it is enormous and complete, curling right across the zenith with its tail intact. Guests who know the constellation from home frequently fail to recognise it at first because they have never seen the whole of it.

For planets, Jupiter and Saturn are the ones worth bringing binoculars for. Steadied against a vehicle roof or a fence post, ordinary 8x42 safari binoculars will show Jupiter's four Galilean moons as a line of pinpricks beside the planet — the same sight that convinced Galileo the earth was not the centre of everything. It takes about fifteen seconds to show a child and it tends to be the moment they remember.

Safety, and how to actually do this at camp

The practical constraint is that most safari camps are unfenced and wildlife moves through them at night. This is not a marketing detail, it is genuinely why you are escorted to your tent after dark. Buffalo, hyena and elephant all pass through camps regularly, and buffalo in particular are dangerous to encounter on foot in the dark.

The answer is not to skip the stars but to arrange it properly. Ask the camp to set chairs out in a safe spot with a guard present, which most will happily do if asked at dinner rather than at eleven at night. Some camps have a designated star deck or fire pit for exactly this. Bring a red-light torch — a normal white torch destroys your night vision for around twenty minutes, and everyone else's too.

Give your eyes time. Full dark adaptation takes around thirty to forty minutes, and the sky at minute forty is dramatically better than the sky at minute five. This is the most common mistake: people step outside, look up for two minutes, decide it is nice, and go to bed. Sit down, put the phone away entirely, and wait. That is the whole technique.

The other reason to be outside at night

Once you are sitting still in the dark with your eyes adapted, you start hearing the ecosystem rather than watching it, and this is the part guests are least prepared for. Hyena whoop across several kilometres of plain. Lion roar, and the sound at close range is felt in the chest rather than merely heard — a full sequence carries eight kilometres and is the loudest noise any African mammal makes. Bushbabies scream in the acacia. Nightjars churr continuously.

Ask your guide to sit with you for the first half hour and name what you are hearing. It converts an unsettling wall of noise into a legible map of what is moving around camp, and it is one of the most valuable half-hours of a safari. Most guests never ask, and most guides never volunteer it, which is a shame — the East African night is at least as rich as the day and it is included in the price.
