Mara River Crossing Wildebeest

Day 5

The Great Crossing

1.5 Million Wildebeest

This is the day. Your guide positions you at the optimal crossing point before dawn. The tension builds as the herds gather on the Tanzanian bank — thousands of animals milling nervously, testing the water. Then one goes in, and the stampede begins. A wall of wildebeest plunges into the crocodile-filled waters in a primal, chaotic surge. Nile crocodiles erupt from the depths. The roar of hooves and splashing water fills the air. This is the most extraordinary wildlife moment on earth — and you are here.

  • Pre-dawn positioning at the Mara River crossing point
  • Full-day station at the river during crossing season
  • 1.5+ million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra
  • Nile crocodile interactions at crossing
  • Resident predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo
  • Sundowner at the river with reflection time

Descend 600 metres into the crater floor where 25,000 animals live within the natural confines of this ancient collapsed volcano. Black rhino, lion prides, vast buffalo herds, spotted hyena clans and pink flamingo-filled soda lakes — the Crater delivers an entirely different and unforgettable dimension to your safari.

  • Morning departure from North Serengeti
  • Scenic drive south through central Serengeti
  • Ngorongoro rim arrival and crater views
  • Crater descent (600 metres)
